Materials

  • 1 sheet Wax paper
  • 2-3 crayons Crayons (or colored pencils) Use various colors for a vibrant look
  • 1 Pencil sharpener To create crayon shavings
  • 1 Iron For melting crayon shavings
  • 1 sheet Medium-weight paper For backing
  • 1 pair Scissors For cutting shapes
  • 1 optional Hole punch To create hanging holes
  • 1 string String or ribbon For hanging

Instructions

Preparation

  • Clear a flat surface and gather all materials.
  • Lay down newspaper or an old cloth to protect surfaces from melted crayon wax.

Creating Crayon Shavings

  • Use a pencil sharpener to create crayon shavings in various colors.
  • Feel the smoothness of the crayons as you sharpen them, creating a pile of colorful bits.

Assembling the Sun Catcher

  • Take a piece of wax paper and lay it flat.
  • Sprinkle a generous amount of crayon shavings onto the center of the wax paper, creating a colorful mosaic.

Ironing the Wax Paper

  • Carefully place another piece of wax paper over the crayon shavings.
  • Using a medium heat setting, gently iron over the top piece of wax paper. The crayon will melt and fuse the layers.
  • Watch the colors blend and transform as you press the iron over the paper.

Cutting and Shaping

  • Once cooled, cut the wax paper into shapes (e.g., circles, hearts) as desired.
  • For added aesthetics, use a hole punch to create a pattern or hang them later.

Backing

  • Glue the wax paper shapes onto medium-weight paper for additional support and a framed look.

Notes

Customize the colors for seasonal themes and explore using different materials like tissue paper. Supervise children during the use of heat.
