Ingredients

Materials

  • 5 pieces small plastic or paper cups Used to hold the rocket ingredients.
  • 2 pieces chalk The kind typically used in playgrounds.
  • 0.5 cup white vinegar Acidic component for the reaction.
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda Creates carbon dioxide gas when combined with vinegar.
  • 1 small amount water To mix with baking soda to create a paste.
  • 1 pair safety goggles To protect the eyes during the experiment.
  • 1 tray tray or outdoor space for launching To contain any mess during the rocket launch.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Choose an open, outdoor space to avoid any indoor mess. Lay down a tray or a cloth for easy cleanup.
  • Assemble all the materials in one place for convenience.

Creating the Rockets

  • Break the chalk into small pieces, about the size of a coin.
  • Place the chalk pieces into the cups—that's your rocket body!

Mixing the Ingredients

  • In a separate container, mix a tablespoon of baking soda with a small amount of water to create a thick paste.

Combining and Launching

  • Pour about half a cup of vinegar into the cup with the chalk.
  • Quickly add the baking soda paste on top of the vinegar and step back!
  • Stand back and observe as the reaction produces fizz, launching your pop rockets into the air!

Notes

Customize your rockets by using different shapes of containers for varied designs. Experiment with ratios of vinegar and baking soda for different launch heights, and consider using colored chalk or dye the vinegar for a visually striking display.
