Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Borax powder Essential for crystal growth
  • 2 cups Water Need to boil it first
  • 1 jar Glass or jar to hold the tree
  • 3 pieces Pipe cleaners (in multiple colors) For crafting the tree structure
  • 1 spoon Spoon For stirring the solution
  • optional Food coloring To add color to the crystals

Additional Materials

  • White glue To secure the tree structure
  • Boiling water Required for the solution

Instructions

Craft the Tree Structure

  • Bend and twist a few pipe cleaners together to create a tree trunk and branches. Feel free to get creative with the design!
  • Use glue to attach the ends of the pipe cleaners to ensure they hold together. Allow the glue to dry completely.

Prepare the Crystal Solution

  • Carefully boil 2 cups of water and pour it into a heat-resistant bowl or the jar where your tree will sit.
  • Gradually add 1/2 cup of Borax to the boiling water, stirring continuously until it dissolves completely. The solution should feel warm and slightly thick.

Add Color (Optional)

  • If you’d like colored crystals, add a few drops of food coloring to your solution and stir well.

Grow the Crystals

  • Place your pipe cleaner tree into the jar, ensuring it is submerged in the Borax solution. Observe how it looks against the liquid.
  • Leave the jar in a warm, undisturbed area for 24-48 hours. As the solution cools, you’ll gradually notice crystals forming.

Reveal Your Creation

  • After the waiting period, carefully take out your tree. You’ll feel the crunchy texture of the crystals!
  • Rinse it under cold water to remove excess Borax, then set it out to dry completely.

Notes

Experiment with different shapes and sizes for your tree trunk and branches, and consider making multiple trees to create a forest effect. Supervise children while handling boiling water and Borax.
